Dijon-Braised Brussels Sprouts

Serves 4 as a side dish

1 pound brussels sprouts
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup dry white wine
1 cup broth (chicken or vegetable)
2 to 3 shallots, peeled and thinly sliced
2 tablespoons heavy cream
1 tablespoon smooth dijon mustard (or more to taste)
2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley (optional)

Trim sprouts and halve lengthwise. In a large, heavy 12-inch skillet heat butter and oil over moderate heat. Arrange halved sprouts in skillet, cut sides down, in one layer. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, to taste. Cook sprouts, without turning until undersides are golden brown, about 5 minutes. [Updated to note: If your sprouts don't fit in one layer, don't fret! Brown them in batches, then add them all back to the pan, spreading them as flat as possible, before continuing with the shallots, wine, etc.]

Add the shallots, wine and stock and bring to a simmer. Once simmering, reduce the heat to medium-low (for a gentle simmer), cover the pot with a lid (foil works too, if your skillet lacks a lid) and cook the sprouts until they are tender can be pierced easily with the tip of a paring knife, about 15 to 20 minutes.

Remove the lid, and scoop out brussels. Add cream and simmer for two to three minutes, until slightly thickened. Whisk in mustard. Taste for seasoning, and adjust as necessary with more salt, pepper or Dijon. Pour sauce over brussels, sprinkle with parsley, if using, and serve immediately.

Most recipes call for only a small portion of tomato paste -- you use a tablespoon or two, and the rest invariably goes to waste. To save the remainder: Carefully open both ends of the can with a can opener. Remove one metal end, and discard it. Leave the other in place. Wrap the entire can in plastic wrap, and freeze overnight. The next day, use the metal end to push the frozen paste out the open end. Discard can, tightly rewrap unused portion, and store in freezer up to 3 months, slicing off just as much as you need each time you cook.

5 New Uses For Fabric Softener Dryer Sheets

A box of fabric softener sheets can go far beyond the laundry room. Just one sheet (even if it's already used) is able to take the place of a bunch of cleaning products. Here are our favorite uses for this must-have:
- Pot "Scrubber." If you're someone who likes baking your macaroni and cheese, you will agree that the worst part is dealing with the messy baking dish, with the fused noodle/cheese hybrid that takes forever to scrape out. You can try soaking it over night with warm soapy water, you'll still have to spend lots of time scrubbing out the baked-on-bits. Instead, throw in a fabric softener sheet into the pot with warm soapy water and leave overnight. The mess will be gone (almost) in the morning. Whatever it is that makes fabric softener make your sweaters and clothes cozy also works as an amazing degreaser--even on the toughest baked-on stuff.
- Gnats No More. Fabric softener sheets not only repel static cling but pests. A joint study last year by Kansas State University and University of Illinois found out that fabric softener sheets repel gnats. Fabric softener contains chemicals that prevent gnat larva from wreaking havoc on indoor and greenhouse potted plants.
- Pet Hair Remover. Did your cat get hair all over your black pants? Don't worry about it. You can use a fabric softener sheet to remove pet hair from your clothes by rolling the sheet against the offending fur. The sheet fights off the static cling that makes pet hair stick.
- Water Spots Be Gone. Most of us have hard water, which can leave calcium deposits on chrome surfaces (like faucets and handles). It's a pain to clean...unless you have a dryer sheet. Simply buff the chrome with a sheet to restore the spotless shine.
- Instant Sachets. Not too surprising, but a dryer sheet is great for clearing the air in stinky situations. Just toss one in a gym bag, in the kitchen garbage or even your sneakers. Your friends and family will thank you.

I know, it is hard to believe but summer is almost over! Some of us spent the time taking and dropping off kids to /from summer camp, taking them to extra activities, and of course, don’t forget to go for ice cream after a blistering 90F summer day.

It is also time to start thinking about buying school supplies, new clothes (remember, the kids need new outfits to impress their peers!) for the beginning of the school year. Once the kids are back to school you promised yourself to do something about that messy closet, messy files (did I pay or not pay my electrical bill?) and don’t forget that you also have to go to work. All those things to take care of plus grocery shopping, laundry, and making arrangements to have someone to wait for the furniture delivery which of course will be done in the middle of the day (not your choice but that is the only slot THEY have for delivery in your area!).

OK. Let’s think this straight: laundry, grocery shopping, pick up dry cleaners, wait for furniture delivery, organize the closets and kids’ room, etc.. Oh, don’t forget the dog, and the cat that need to go to the vet for their annual shots.

What about having someone help out with all these chores and when you get home, maybe you have the time to prepare dinner (Friday can be pizza day!) and enjoy your family without worries (you still have to help the kids with homework…sorry, we don’t offer this service).

Grandpa and Grandma Summer Camp

We had our granddaughters and a friend from Canada spending a week with us. We took them everywhere from the Crayola Factory, Six Flags, the Point Pleasant Boardwalk and of course the pool. The days were very hot but we did not mind. We had a lot of fun and so did the kids.

Breakfast at our new kitchen with Grandpa being the "chef".

Don't they look like angels when sleeping? Actually most of the time they slept on the way back from any activity for that day!

Some of the most memorable moments: Kayla(8 yrs. old)said on her second day with us: can we come next year too?
Morgan (4 yrs. old - one of the twins) - I love to take showers at your house. We can use the grown up shower!
Molly - She eats like a bird and only what she wants to eat not what everyone else is telling her she should eat!
Nicole (7 yrs. old) - our called "niece" from Canada, decided to call us Grandpa and Grandma. She went with the flow and we enjoyed it!

After 4 1/2 months the kitchen is done! It came out so beautiful that it looks like a showroom. To "break" the mold, we added some personal accents. Here are some photos before and after and I hope you enjoy them. The company that did the job was outstanding. They were always there when we needed them and were very professional. I would recommend them in a heartbeat. They were so good, we are making arrangements to have a BBQ at our house for all the workers and their families. They deserve a day off!

Nothing like a blizzard to "cool" us down!

Yesterday we were scheduled to begin the siding of the house. What a perfect day! As you can see the siding will have to wait a week or so. Let's hope that the weather holds off so they can finish the job soon! We were also expecting the cabinets to arrive on WEDNESDAY (the same day as this photo!). Maybe we will get it on Friday.

The flooring is done. We love it. The wood floors now stretch from the front door all the way into the kitchen, which makes all the rooms look bigger and spacious.

We also got our new front door. It brings light inside the living room and at the same time we can see "who is coming for dinner". We are also happy because now we can actually see who is going to rob us before opening the door. The old door did not even have a "peep hole".

We are very pleased with the construction. They keep the place cleaned and organized and the whole job should be done by the end of this month!

The new windows have been installed. We love our bay window! One tip: if you watch all those shows on TV where they demolish a whole area and 30 minutes later your dream room is ready for you to enjoy, forget it! For example: the windows have been placed but now they need to be framed. One of the windows needs sheet rock which is done by someone other than the person who put in the window - go figure! This someone else will show up two days later. The tiles are placed in the kitchen but we need to wait a couple days to dry in order to put in the grout. I wish I could say "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" and everything would be in place! The contract states that the job should be done in 120 days not counting any delays due to weather or materials. It is snowing today which might delay the installation of the siding. We still are on target. The dust too! Everything in the house had to be covered by plastic but it's not enough! I know, I don't seem optimistic but reality is that it will be over soon and completed as we had dreamed of.

Getting in shape!

The new addition is starting to get in shape. We took pics of all the electrical and plumbing for future reference. I can never understand why when you buy a house you don't get a blue print with all the electrical and plumbing marks on it. Every time you think of hanging something on the walls, you have to find out where the studs are, the wiring or even plumbing. The last thing you want to do is to drive a nail into a gas pipe and see your house blow away! Anyway, I decided to take pics of everything for future use (probably for the next buyer of this house which means... when we die!)

Here are some pics of the walls covered with sheet rock. The new windows and doors have already been put in place and it is starting to look like a house. Another month and a half and the job should be done! Hip Hip Hurray!

We really enjoy the whole process of remodeling. Therefore, here is a pic of my husband and I having dinner at our future new kitchen. We love the fact that the skylights, windows and the sliding doors bring a lot of light to the room and even in a gloomy day we hardly ever need to turn the lights on!

A month later...

A month passed by since the remodeling started. Now we found ourselves isolated from the job site. A temporary wall was constructed between the living room and the dining room which blocks us off from the construction site. At the moment we are camping inside the "livable" area of the house. The last time I remembered camping was when I was in my teens. Trust me, a very long time ago and I definitely don't miss the experience!

Let me show you the updates on the construction. Now we have the frame up for the new addition and the kitchen looks huge! The new size of the dining room will allow us to have more sitting room during a meal. I am getting a pantry (my dream comes true!) and the laundry room will even have a slop sink (God knows how handy it is to have one of those!) as well as a counter where I can fold the laundry and a hidden ironing board that pulls out of the wall.

Last week my husband and I went away for a few days. When we came back on Sunday, we were shocked by all the work that was done.
Now that the walls are up we found out that wherever we stand in the new kitchen we have a view of the backyard and not the neighbor's bedroom. What do you think so far?

Another day... another step

The rain is out, plumber is in! For the last two days the plumber has been working on the connections for our new kitchen. I could figure out everything except the long tube in the middle of the "kitchen". My husband has a very good explanation for that: "As you can see, we decided to make the center island 12 feet tall (notice the plumbing for the island sink), that way I can throw food at everybody from above."

Update of the construction of our kitchen. The first sign of destruction (oops, I meant construction) was when I came home at lunch time and saw my beautiful backyard garden all gone!

The foundation it seems to be ready. On Friday the inspector for the town should come to "pay a visit". The weather forecast predicts rain for the next four days. If that happens there will be no updates for a while. But we don't mind since we have a Port-a-John and the foundation is done. Moving along!

The Remodeling Begun!

The work had begun yesterday and we are excited to see so much progress in one day!

Slice Cheese with Dental Floss

A clever way to repurpose an everyday item.Original purpose: Cleaning teeth and gums.

Aha! use: Slicing soft cheese, cake, and hard-boiled eggs. (Or try it as a substitute for kitchen twine to truss a chicken.) It's hygienic, neat, and cheap. Unwaxed works best, and of course you know better than to mix mint-flavored with a vintage Gorgonzola.

Reward: Neater food, fewer cavities.

WD-40

Original purpose: Greasing a squeaky wheel.

Aha! use: Removing crayon from almost any surface: plastic, metal, TV screens, freshly painted walls. Just apply a small amount and rub away with a clean cloth.

Rubber Bands

1. Open jars with ease. When a small lid won’t budge, wrap a rubber band around it several times to give you a better grip.

2. Decorate Easter eggs. Arrange rubber bands in a pattern around hard-boiled eggs, then dip them into dye. Remove the bands when the eggs are dry.

3. Bring order to your dishwasher. Tether stemware and other delicate, wobbly items to the rack.

4. Wrap a gift. Use multiple colored rubber bands instead of ribbon to add modern flair to a small present. (Particularly handy when you can’t find the tape.)

TOOTHPICKS

1. Label meat. Are these burgers rare or well-done? They all look the same on the outside. Identify just-off-the-grill meats with different-colored toothpicks and they won’t get mixed up.

2. Find the end of the roll. When you’ve finished using tape, wrap the end around a toothpick so you can easily locate it the next time.

3. Glue beads and sequins. Use the sharp ends to apply teensy items to a craft project.

Was this something we were supposed to learn from our Mom's????? I can't believe it's been there all this time.

I had to go into the kitchen and check this out for myself. Whoever looks at the end of your aluminum foil box?

You know when you try to pull some foil out and the roll comes out of the box. Then you have to put the roll back in the box and start over. The darn roll always comes out at the wrong time. Well, I would like to share this with you.
One day I went to throw out an empty Reynolds foil box and for some reason I turned it, and looked at the end of the box. And written on the end it said, Press here to lock end. Right there on the end of the box is a tab to lock the roll in place.

How long has this little locking tab been there? I then looked at a generic brand of aluminum foil and it had one, too. I then looked at a box of Saran wrap and it had one too! I can't count the number of times the Saran wrap roll has jumped out, when I was trying to cover something up.

I hope I'm not the only person that didn't know about this. I know you're going to go and check your boxes, so go ahead!

Shower Doors, Curtains and Showerheads
